Saffron (Crocus Sativus) is a herbaceous plant native to the Mediterranean basin, from whose inflorescence the homonymous spice is obtained, used as a dye in liqueur shops, pharmacies and perfumery. 95% of world saffron production comes from Kashmir, India and Iran, countries where this spice has been used since ancient times for its healing, coloring and flavoring properties. The part that is used in saffron are the stigmas (each flower contains about three to five) from which a powder is obtained.

The high costs of this spice are given by the fact that to obtain 1kg of saffron it takes the stigmas of 120-150 flowers and almost 550 hours of work. The Arabs were the first to recognize this spice as having a particular curative value, considering it an excellent and very valid natural antidepressant capable of bringing a good mood. Saffron contains minerals such as calcium, phosphorus, potassium, iron and is rich in carbohydrates, proteins, vitamins A, vitamins B1 and B2, vitamin C and carotenoids such as Lycopene and Zeaxanthin.

Carotenoids are unparalleled antioxidants thanks to their effectiveness against the formation of free radicals, i.e. those molecules responsible for damaging cells and accelerating skin aging (on average we produce 5 grams of radical waste: saffron alone would be able to eliminate about 1 gram, equal to 20%).

Saffron helps reduce facial hyper-pigmentation and tone the skin.
