Shea butter is a substance obtained from the seeds of a plant called Vitellaria paradoxa (or Butyrospermum parkii) and made up of a set of fatty substances that take the name of “butter”. The plant is also called the “tree of youth“, it is woody, with a tall trunk and grows in the arid landscapes of the sub-Saharan savannah. The butter obtained from the seeds was discovered by local businesses in which it was used on dry and chapped skin to soften the epidermis, as well as on the hair to improve its shine.
Today it is used internationally in cosmetics to exploit its peculiar characteristics such as emollient, softener, anti-wrinkle, anti-stretch mark, anti-inflammatory, calming. It is completely absorbed in the skin and leaves no signs of greasiness, giving the skin firmness and elasticity.
Its composition shows a particular richness in fat-soluble vitamins, A and E, known for their antioxidant activity useful for counteracting the formation of free radicals.
